Muscle cramps
What are Muscle cramps?
In Ayurveda, muscular cramps and spasms are comprehensively understood through the concepts of Mamsagata Vata and Mamsasthita/Mamsasthayi Vata/Mamsashrita Vata conditions. These conditions are attributed to prolonged factors that provoke Vata dosha, including dietary habits, medication, age, cold geographical areas, and cold seasons, among others. As Vata becomes vitiated, it takes refuge in debilitated muscles, subsequently affecting the Kapha dosha. This process results in a painful condition accompanied by spasms or bulging due to the decline in muscular strength. Consequently, Ayurveda terms this condition as Mamsagata Vata, and depending on the predominant location of the affected Mamsa, the term ‘Pindikodveshtana’ is also employed to describe this phenomenon. This comprehensive understanding in Ayurveda allows for targeted and holistic approaches in the treatment and management of muscular cramps and spasms.
